What is it?

This little program is a software remote control. It is in a very early stage of development now but it is meant to control:

  • X10 devices (with the heyu program and an X10 controller connected to your computer)
  • any infra-red device (using LIRC and an IR transmitter)
  • anything else with the help of shell scripts.
Domo-do will (eventually) be released under the terms of the General Public License.

Check the status page to see how the project is doing.

What's in a name?

The project was originally called SoftRemote but I have plans to make it more than a simple remote so I thought about DomoClick. But to avoid confusion witht the home automation portal www.domoclick.com and a few other products and programs I'm changing it again, this time to Domo-do.

I'm not completely happy with this name so I welcome suggestions for a better name. ;)

Why bother?

I would like to be able to control almost everything in my house when I move in a couple of months. In the living room everything is nice and easy: with a learning remote control I can take care of all my HiFi and TV setup and the lights that will all be X10 equipped.
But when I am upstairs do I really want to go downstairs to switch off that light or to turn the music up a bit (it might happen that I want to turn the music down but it is not as likely ;-). Obviously I'd rather do all this and more from upstairs. So here come into play my little software remote.

I already have an X10 controller so all I need to control almost everything from upstairs is an infra-red transmitter. And I should get one of those soon.
