The film
Ghost in the Shell is a complex story about about machines vs humans, personality and reality. The scenario is exceptionaly detailled and in depth for this kind of film. I am not an expert in japanimation but this is by far the best in this genre that I've seen. The traditional animation is succesfully complemented by computer graphics. The result is vey nice. The backgrounds are extremely realistic -- the "guided tour" of the City (Hong Kong) is in my opinion one of the best part of the film.

Picture
The format on this DVD is 16:9. The original screen ratio was 1.85:1. The quality of the transfer is otherwise quite good.

Sound
The half an hour long documentary deals at length with the painstaking creation of the soundtrack so I find quite disapointing that the Japanese version on this DVD has such a poor Dolby surround sound that sounds almost flat. The English dubbing on the other hand sounds wonderfull in Dolby Digital 5.1. But you will loose a lot from the original voices. The English voices often sound like the dialogs are read, there is no life in them. During the scene on the boat when Motoko and Batou talk about hope they sound like machines. Going back to the Japanese version is a relief: yes they are human!. And there is a lot of differences between the subtitles and the dubbed version (unfortunately my Japanese is much too basic for me to understand the original dialogs). I encourage you to watch it first in Japanese to fully understand the story and then once in English for the quality of the sound. Also I could swear that when I saw the film in the cinema the theme song was played during the closing credits, I can't understand why they replaced it!

Extras
There is a good half hour feature and a trailer. There is also some extras for DVD-ROM but I don't have one of those.
